When discussing home insurance, many discuss ways to protect your home to prevent an insurance claim on your dwelling or personal belongings coverage. However, another major reason for homeowners filing a claim on their policy is a liability. Preventing liability accidents on your property is critical to keep your visitors and family safe.
Maintenance Upkeep Inside and Out
One of the common ways you can prevent injuries and damages to other people is keeping your home up to date and fixing any issues as they arise. Broken steps, loose hinges, broken glass and more can cause serious injury to your visitors. Make sure your home is up to code according to safety regulations. If there are any issues that could pose a threat to visitors, it is best to not have anyone visit until those issues are handled.
Clean Up Spills
Slips and falls can range from mild to serious, especially depending on where the falls occur. Falls in the kitchen or near a pool can be extremely serious, leading to cuts due to knives or even possible drowning. Warn guests of spills and clean them up as soon as possible to avoid injury.
Be Wary of Pets
Pets can also be covered under your liability insurance policy, but it is important to be careful either way. Dog bites can be especially serious and often come when you’re least expecting it. Know your pet’s limits and understand the signs of a stressed dog or a dog about to bite. If a pet doesn’t like people, keep them locked away from guests.
This also applies to property damage. If your pet has a destructive nature, as many puppies do, make sure your guests keep their belongings out of range or place your pup in a room away from everyone’s items.
Watch Children
Children are the most likely group to be injured due to their playful and clumsy nature. It is generally recommended that you keep children off of steep stairs and make sure they do not run near pulls or hot tubs.
This also applies to your own children, who may be covered under liability insurance. Make sure children outside are supervised so they do not cause accidental damage to a neighbor’s property.
If someone is injured in the home, make sure to have a first-aid kit handy and call emergency services immediately. Even small injuries should receive medical attention as soon as possible, as you never know when a small injury may persist or worsen.
